Three Nymph Rig
Rigging and casting three trout nymph on one leader is much easier than some anglers believe. I use a Murray’s Classic 7 1/2ft 3X Leader and attach a size 10 nymph with an improved clinch knot. To this I attach 24 inches of 4X tippet material to the bend of the size 10 nymph with an improved clinch knot. Then I tie on a size 12 nymph. Next, tie on 24 inches of 5X tippet material to the bend of the size 12 nymph. Tie a size 14 nymph to this.
In order to prevent foul-ups in my leader when casting I pick the flies up from the stream with a low side arm back cast to the right. As the leader straightens out behind me I turn the rod up straight by turning my wrist up vertically. Now I make an overhead cast that places the nymphs on the stream. This elliptical side arm cast prevents leader problems and gives excellent accuracy. Basically I am bringing the nymphs in low and casting them back out at a high angle.
(A nymph rig is very effective on many large trout streams. Here on the Madison River it helped Jeff catch many large trout.)
