October Fly Fishing in Virginia

Fly Fishing in October

October fly fishing on the delayed harvest areas for stocked trout can be very rewarding. The Virginia DWR will be stocking large rainbows and browns throughout the streams. Many of the largest browns are caught in the deep pools on Spuddlers and Shenandoah Silver Streamer. The largest rainbows can be caught below the riffles and in the fast runs on a Murray’s Heavy Black Hellgrammite size 8 and Murray’s Skunk Roadkill Nymph size 8. Fish all of these deeply with a slow stripping action. >>Listen to my podcast for more information.

Smallmouth Bass Fly Fishing

This month has been known to produce larger bass than other months. Fish in the deep pools with a Sinking Tip III fly line to help swim your flies along the stream bottom. I use big flies to entice these big bass. The Murray’s Tungsten Cone Head Marauder in pearl, olive or black in size 4 provides a big mouthful for the bass. The Murray’s Magnum Hog Sucker size 4 is another successful fly in the deep pools. Fish these on a 2X Knotted Hand Tied Leader. For more information on these streams, see my book Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams.
