Trout to Smallmouth

Trout versus Smallmouth Blog by Harry Murray

Suppose you grew up in Paradise Valley of Montana and you spent your first 30 years fly fishing for trout. Then your employer offers you a position with the company in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia which is just too wonderful to turn down.

You anticipate the smallmouth fishing but you wonder how different it will be from your trout fishing in Montana.

In evaluating my first book Fly Fishing for Smallmouth Bass which I wrote for Nick Lyons.  Lamar Underwood the former editor-in-chief of Sports Afield and Outdoor Life answered this..”Harry Murray has broken new ground by using trout angling techniques and lore to develop consistently effective strategies for fly fishing for smallmouth. The result will be more action when you’re on the water–the kind of action only the bronze bass can provide.”

Stay tuned..next week I will discuss how some of the trout and smallmouth tactics overlap.

Jeff Murray (pictured above) fishes the Hexagenia Mayfly Hatch for smallmouth bass on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River in Virginia the same way he fishes many hatches for trout in the Rockies.
