The Five Best Flies for Fishing Large Trout Streams in the Spring
From March through June the large trout streams provide great fishing. These five flies cover many of the natural foods the trout feed upon and thus are very effective.
– Little Yellow Stonefly Nymph size 16
– Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 14
– Murray’s Caddis Larva size 14
– Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 14
– Shenandoah Nine Three Simple Streamer size 10
Often a two fly rig is very effective on these large trout streams early in the season. Attach a Shenandoah Nine Three Simple Streamer size 10 to a Murray’s Classic 7.5 foot 4X Leader. Come off the bend of this hook with twenty four inches of 5X tippet using a improved clinch knot. Fish this across stream with a slow stripping action below the riffles and in the deep pools. As the streams get warm later in March another two fly rig is very effective. Here I use a Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 14 on a Murray’s Classic 7.5 foot 4X Leader. I come off the bend of this hook with twenty four inches of 5X tippet to which I attach a Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 14. I fish this upstream dead drift along the edges of the riffles and in the tails of the pools.
