The most fun and best success when fishing for cruising trout comes by actually spotting the trout and going one on one with each fish. The easiest trout to see is the one that is moving. He may be swinging to the side to take a nymph or he may simply be relocating on his feeding station. Another trout that is easy to see is the one who is much darker or lighter than the stream bottom over which he is lying. Likewise the shape of the trout can be an easy giveaway. For example, the square tail of a brook trout lying beside round stream bottom rocks shows his location. The shadow a trout casts upon the stream bottom on a sunny day is often much easier to spot than the trout.
Whichever of these methods you use to see your cruising trout will enable you to cast your fly out in front of him and catch him.
