Scientific Anglers Used As A Depth Gauge

10/29/2020 – The Scientific Anglers Indicators have been discontinued as of January 8, 2020. We began looking for a suitable replacement several years ago when we knew they would be discontinued.  We have found a source for the same, slip on – non-floating/ non-sinking, indicators.  These are available as our Murray’s Fly Shop Indicator available in packages of three or included on our Nymphing Leader and Bright Butt Leaders.

When I’m fishing my “Sweeping a Streamer” and my “Swing Nymphing” technique in order to fish these flies very deeply with a floating line I use the MFS Indicators in order to help me see if I’m getting these flies as deep as I want them. Using my Bright Butt Knotted Leader, I place one MFS Indicator in the butt section of the leader and a second one in the next leader strand down.
When my heavy nymphs and streamers are cast up and across stream I pause with these on a slack line and watch my indicators to see if my flies are going deep. Only when the lower MFS Indicator has sunken out of sight and the upper indicator is starting to drift very deeply do I know my flies are down along the stream bottom where the big fish are. Then by swinging my rod tip downstream ahead of the fly I can instantly feel the strike and hook the fish.
