One of my favorite ways to fish for trout is to spot the trout then go one on one with him. An excellent way to systematically look over the whole pool and carefully evaluate each location as a potential feeding station that could hold a trout is to use your fly rod as a pointer, starting by surveying the lower portion of the pool. Trace a path with your fly rod as you sight out over it. Gradually lift your fly rod, tip and view as you search from one side of the pool to the next as you carefully explore the whole pool. This method often reveals many trout that one misses with more casual glances.
