Night Fishing for Smallmouth Bass

You just might catch your largest bass of the season by fishing at night.  Their affinity for this low light level and the abundance of natural food at night prompt them to feed heavily.  Their boldness makes them much easier to catch than they are in the middle of the day.  In order for you to take advantage of this great fishing let’s look at the tackle which is helpful, productive flies and effective tactics.

I use the same 9ft. 7 weight rod and 4 oz. reel and WF-7 floating line at night which I use during the day.  However, I do use an 0X leader at night as compared to 2X during the day, just to handle the big bass.  I find a good wading stick, a great help in probing the stream bottom ahead of me and to provide extra stability.  A small waterproof flashlight is needed for changing flies and reworking leaders.  Large streamers such as the Murray’s Magnum Hog Sucker and Magnum Creek Chub both in size 4 are very effective at night as are the Shenandoah Gray Scaled Chuggars size 4.

I like to wade downstream and cast down and across stream at a 30 degree angle so I can use a slow line hand stripping action which is very effective and it easily lets me feel the strike and set the hook.
