Loop vs. Needle Knot: Choosing the Right Fly Line Connection

This week, we’re discussing loop-to-loop connections versus needle knots and why I choose one method over the other depending on the fly-fishing setup.

Most modern fly lines come with a built-in loop at the front of the fly line, making it quick and convenient to attach a leader using a loop-to-loop connection. I use this setup on my seven-weight fly rod for smallmouth bass, where the convenience and versatility of a loop-to-loop connection work particularly well.

For my trout fly-fishing outfits, however, I prefer a different approach. On my two- and three-weight outfits in the East, as well as my four- through six-weight outfits in the Rockies, I attach the leader directly to the fly line using a needle knot.

After tying the needle knot, I coat it with three very thin coats of Pliobond to help protect and secure the connection.

Why I Prefer a Needle Knot for Trout Fishing

For lighter fly-fishing setups, I find that a needle-knot connection has a significant advantage: it passes through the rod guides more smoothly than a loop-to-loop connection.

When fishing lighter-weight trout outfits, that smoother connection can make a difference, particularly when casting longer leaders or when the leader and fly line need to travel through the guides.

A loop-to-loop connection is certainly convenient, especially when you want to change leaders quickly. But for my lighter trout outfits, I prefer the streamlined profile of a needle knot.

Ultimately, both methods have their place. Loop-to-loop connections offer convenience and easy leader changes, while a needle knot provides a slim, smooth connection that works especially well on lighter fly-fishing setups.
