House Flies

The mountain trout streams now have unusually large populations of houseflies along the banks and the trout are feeding heavily upon them. Matching these natural insects with your flies gives you a good chance to easily catch many large trout because few anglers even carry a housefly pattern. In fact, this was why I developed the Murray’s Housefly twenty years ago. I was fishing the famous PA spring creeks every week and the heavy angling pressure caused the trout to become familiar with all of the standard artifical flies and many of the largest trout simply would not take them. By developing the Murray’s Housefly which shows the trout an entirely different light pattern on the streams’ surface film I was able to fool many of these tough trout. Actually this is definitely the case on mountain trout streams. Fish the tails of the pools with the Murray’s Housefly size 14 & 16 on a 6X leader by simply covering the water. Then carefully look over the whole pool for rising trout and go one on one with these fish. Finally, drift your fly along the sides on the incoming riffles to catch those trout which are feeding on the natural houseflies which wash in from the pool upstream.
