I have great success with “high floating attractors” dry flies by drifting them along the banks on the big rivers. The corner of the choppy riffles often gives me many rainbows on the Madison and Yellowstone from May to October.
The great floating quality of these flies make them ideal to drift a dropper 2-3 feet below them. A size 16 Bead Head Prince is perfect as a dropper below these attractors on the Yellowstone River. These are ideal on high gradient western trout streams like many found in the Yellowstone National Park.
In June the mayfly hatches on the smallmouth bass rivers in Virginia bring many bass to the surface. Even the spinner fall can bring many smallmouths to the surface at dusk. I can get some great smallmouth bass fishing on these high floating dries all summer on the Shenandoah River. When I get tired of fishing poppers, I’ll switch to a dry fly and experiment with different droppers. Be sure to dress your dry fly with dry fly floatant such as S.A. Floatant or High N Dry Floatant.
