Good Drift

All of the trout and smallmouth streams are running at full levels. This can be good because the fish are not as wary in these conditions as when the streams get low and clear. However, this powerful current can cause us some special problems. Here are four steps that help me in these full streams.

1. Don’t cast across powerful mixed currents because this will rob you of depth with nymphs and streamers and it will produce drag with dry flies.
2. Read the water very carefully to determine where you suspect the fish will be holding.
3. Wade as close to these feeding stations as you possibly can without scaring the fish.
4. Upon completion of your presentation cast extend your fly rod high at a 45 degree angle out over the stream to negate the undesirable currents and get a natural drift.
