Give Him the Butt

When you hook a large hot fish don’t try to subdue him quickly by sticking your rod tip in the air and leaning back on the rod. This is a good way to break the rod. A better ploy is to fight him with the rod at a lower angle. Only when you are ready to land him do you extend the fly rod straight up to cushion a last minute run.
