If you hang a fly on an underwater rock as you are fishing across and downstream the current can help you free it. First check to see if it stuck when coming straight across stream or if it was at a 45 degree angle below you. If it was below you pull 30 feet of line from your reel, point the rod tip straight downstream and allow the current to pull it tight on the fly, then jerk the line straight back upstream. If you were hooked on the downstream side of a rock this will pull it free. If the fly stuck coming straight across stream pull 20 feet of line from your reel and wiggle the rod tip so all of the line is beyond the rod tip. Then roll cast all of this beyond the stuck fly and when all of the line is in the water on the far side of the fly jerk it hard and it will pull the fly from the far side of the rock.
