May provides us with some excellent fly fishing on the native brook trout streams and smallmouth bass rivers. In this podcast we cover fly fishing tips for each.
Smallmouth Bass
Water levels are lower than normal for this time of year but water temperatures are ideal. The bass are in the pre-spawn stage. We are using heavy flies such as Murray’s Heavy Hellgrammites and Murray’s Magnum Streamers. Murray’s Crayfish in size 4 around the cobblestone bottoms works well. Listen to the Podcast for more info.
Fly Fishing for Native Brook Trout
There are several hatches occurring this month–the heaviest being the Little Yellow Stoneflies. March Browns are active along with caddisflies. Murray’s Little Yellow Stonefly Dry size 16, Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16, and Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis, Olive size 16 are recommended. Lots of dry fly action going on. Water levels are low and the trout are very wary. Listen to the Podcast for more info.
