The delayed harvest trout streams are providing some good fly fishing below the springs. These springs are easy to locate by the rich green weed growth both on the bank around the spring and in the spring where they flow into the main stream. These help our trout fishing by warming the streams in the winter and prompting cress bugs and shrimp growth downstream of them.
I like to start 100ft. downstream of these springs on the streams less than 20ft. wide. Fish a Cress Bug or Murray’s Shrimp upstream dead drift. Listen to my podcast for more information on fishing these springs.>>
Fly Fishing for Smallmouth Bass
The smallmouth bass streams are cold and the bass are going to be in the deepest pools. In order to have a shot at catching any bass in these condition, you will need a sinking tip fly line to help swim the flies along the stream bottom with a natural looking action. Using a Murray’s 6ft 2X sinking leader helps in assuring we are getting the flies the depth we need. My go to fly–the Murray’s Tungsten Cone Head Marauder in size 4.
