Fishing with streamers is very productive. Large rainbows and brown trout feed heavily on minnows in all streams. Whether I’m fishing the Yellowstone River or Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg, Virginia, I often use streamer flies which match the minnows these trout feed upon.
Amazingly sculpin minnows are an important food source in both of these rivers. My favorite streamer to match these minnows is the Spuddler.
I have great success wading into the side of the stream right below the riffles and cast straight across stream. After my streamer sinks deeply I swim it across stream by stripping it six inches every five seconds. I wade slowly down the stream pausing every 3-4 feet to repeat this technique.
Length of the casts depends upon the size of the stream. For example, a stream which is 40 feet wide can be effectively covered with 30ft casts. Whereas a river 200 feet wide will give you great fishing with 60ft casts.
