Fishing the Adult Beatis

Earlier we discussed the methods to fish underwater flies when the natural Blue Wing Olive Mayfly nymphs become active.  This week let’s look at a effective flies and techniques to use when the natural adult BWO flies are on the stream.

This is one of my favorite hatches but it is often fickle.  By that I mean the density of the hatch can vary from day to day and the time of day when the greatest number of flies are on the water can vary from day to day.  For example, one cool fall day when my fishing partner and I were fishing about a half mile apart on the same stream  When we met at the car that evening he stated, “that was the best BWO hatch with the most rising trout I’ve ever seen.”  This really surprised me because there were few flies and no rising trout in my area…and the two areas had the same type water. The most consistent conditions I know that produces good hatches and many rising trout is heavy overcast skies.

My favorite dry flies for this fishing are the Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 18 and Beatis Parachute size 18.  Watch for rising trout and fish them with 6X leaders and these flies.  The large trout can be very tough when feeding on this hatch so I often use a puddle cast to present slack line in order to get a natural drift.
