Dry Flies

When you are tying your own dry flies there are several things you can do to be assured they will float well. 1. Use a lighter than water, non water adsorbing body material—I like Fly-Rite, 2. Use stiff, strong, non water adsorbing tail material—I like moose body hair, 3. Use the best hackle you can afford, 4. Use wings of materials that will not adsorb water such as elk hair and calf tail, 5. Use the lightest wire hooks you can justify—just so the size trout your catching can’t bend them open.
