Drake Hatch

Drake hatch on the trout streams

I developed the Murray’s Drake Dry Fly in 3 colors so you can match the natural insects which are hatching on the day you are fishing. A trick from Jack Sperry—capture some of the natural insects on the stream then go to your fly box and select the artificial that matches. The yellow is for natural Sulphurs and Light Cahill. The brown is for natural March Browns, Gray Fox, and Brown Sedge. The olive is for natural Quill Gordon, March Browns, and Green Drake.

The Green Para Drake works great on the Eastern streams during the Green Drake hatch. I have numerous customers saying it works well on the western trout streams as well.  This is usually the last fly on the water as darkness approaches. Most mountain streams produce more of these than you would expect..just stay on the stream until dark. Some of the finest fishing I’ve ever had has been in the Adirondacks on the green drake hatch. This fly has an extended body providing a big mouthful for the trout.

Remember to blot your dry fly in order to absorb the excess water from it before applying the new dry fly floatant. Otherwise you are compounding the problem.
