Drag

Trout in mountain streams normally refuse a dry fly which “drags” unnaturally: in fact, I’ve actually seen this spook trout causing them to run off their feeding stations. However, there is one feeding station where a dragging fly is not always bad with the full streams and good hatches we have now. Frequently the largest trout in the pool will be on the “lip” now because many emerging duns are funneled across this feeding station. Many of these duns take off just as they reach the lip and close observation will show you many trout that swing up for these naturals only to miss them as they fly away. If you are fishing a dry on the lip and you get last minute drag and you see the trout refuse it, just cast up there again and get a drag free drift and you will take him. I believe he assumes our dragging fly was just another natural that got away from him. The very effective drys here are the Mr. Rapidan, Murray’s Professor, and Spirit of Pittsford Mills all in size 14.
