Deep Streamers for Bass

When the smallmouth bass are holding in the deep runs and are providing great action with streamers fished right along the stream bottom.  My method of “Swimming a Streamer” is very effective here and one beginner in my school caught many nice bass using it.  Here is how I teach this technique.

Set yourself up on the side of the river right beside the deep water you suspect is holding the bass.  Your first cast is 20 feet long up and across stream at a 45 degree angle.  The streamer is allowed to sink on a slack line.  After it is close to the stream bottom the fly rod is extended high out over the river at a 45 degree angle.  The slack line is stripped in with the line hand so you have a tight line to your streamer.  As the current pushes your streamer downstream you pivot your body keeping your rod high out over the the river which enables you to feel the strike and set the hook.  Successive casts are made 5 feet longer still at a 45 degree angle upstream until you have covered all of the water out to 30 feet.  By wading downstream and stopping every 10 feet to repeat this method you can catch many large bass.
