Caddis Larva Active on the Delayed Harvest Streams Throughout Virginia

Rainbow Trout caught on a Caddis Pupa - Murray's Fly Shop

Many caddis larva are very active on the delayed harvest streams throughout Virginia. A good way to catch the trout which are feeding on these naturals is to use a two fly rig. Use Murray’s Trout Nymph 9 foot 4X Leader which has two built in Murray’s Fly Shop Indicators.  Attach Murray’s Olive Magic Caddis Pupa size 14 to this leader. Next tie a two foot strain of 4X mono to the bend of the Pupa hook with an improved clinch knot. To this attach Murray’s Caddis Larva size 16.
On the small streams start below the tail of the pools. Fish this rig upstream dead drift. Fish this very carefully along the sides of the pools where the current brushes by the slow back eddies. Next wade up to the pool to within fifteen feet of the riffle. Fish the water right below the riffle using the same dead drifting method.
On streams which are over thirty feet wide use this same two fly rig to cast across stream. Swim the flies back across the stream by stripping them two inches every ten seconds as you wade slowly downstream.
