Bass Under Tree Limbs

Bass Under Tree Limbs

Often I catch some large bass that are on feeding stations along the banks where there are many tree limbs that hang down within 2 or 3 feet of the surface of the river. Where these extend 20 to 30 feet out over the river, they attract many bass.

A good tactic which enables me to get my flies under these limbs to these bass is to tip my fly rod to the side on the presentation cast. This side arm cast propels the fly deeply to the feeding station where you can use your line hand to import various actions in order to see what the bass will take.

Another tactic I use in order to run my bugs deeply under these low-hanging limbs is to look for openings in the limbs upstream of the bank I want to fish and cast my bug into this opening. Then by mending some slack into the fly line as the bug drifts downstream along the bank, I can often get it 20 or 30 feet down stream to the shaded feeding station.

These ploys often catch some easy-bass because few people fish to them.
