Fly Fishing with Bass Nymphs for Shenandoah River Smallmouth Bass (Part 1)

Bass Nymph Fly Fishing

Fly fishing with bass nymphs is one of the most effective ways to catch smallmouth bass on the Shenandoah River, especially during the heat of summer when water levels drop and clarity increases. While many anglers focus on streamers or topwater flies, subsurface nymph patterns often produce more consistent action by imitating crayfish, hellgrammites, stoneflies, and other aquatic insects that smallmouth bass feed on every day.

Among our favorite patterns, the Rubber Leg Nymph has proven itself time and again as one of the most productive flies for summer smallmouth bass fly fishing. When rivers are running low and clear and bass become selective, this is often the first fly our Murray’s Fly Shop guides tie on. Its lifelike movement and natural profile make it an outstanding choice for fooling even heavily pressured fish.

In the video below, fly fishing guide and fly shop owner Harry Murray shares his proven techniques for fishing bass nymphs on the Shenandoah River. Although this video was recorded several years ago, the strategies, presentations, and lessons remain just as effective today and continue to help anglers catch more smallmouth bass throughout the summer.

While it’s a proven producer on smallmouth rivers, don’t put it away when bass season winds down—many anglers rely on this same nymph on stocked trout streams for rainbows and browns from October through April.

We will continue to feature more bass nymphs over the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned!
