As the trout streams get low the trout become wary. In order to prevent scaring these fish one is often tempted to make longer and longer casts. The problem that arises with long casts is that drag can set in on the line and leader causing the fly to behave unnaturally and the trout will refuse to take the fly. Here are three solutions to this long-line dilemma.
1) Go to your hand and knees and sneak in closer so you can make a shorter cast.
2) Use a “puddle cast” by stopping your presentation cast 45 degrees over the stream and the resulting slack will help you get a drag free drift.
3) Use a “lazy S” cast on the presentation cast by wiggling the rod tip from side to side as the line flows forward. This controlled slack line and leader settling on the stream will help prevent the fly from dragging unnaturally.
