Saturday’s Trout Class at the fly shop reminded me of several things; some things I need to do, some need to be fixed, some undone, but mostly, how much I enjoy teaching and learning. The pure pleasure of the interaction with eager folks is simply enough of a reward, but it goes further than that.
Sometimes I find that one person’s understanding of something that I have always viewed one way can change my whole way of approaching a topic. Sometimes it is a simple phrase and sometimes it is an hour long discussion.
I find it enjoyable to continually recreate different, if not new, ways of relaying the information to others with eager ears. How many ways can you say “Sneak up on each pool in a mountain trout stream very carefully” or “Check your leader frequently for wind knots“? Not a lot of earth shattering new information, just fresh ways of looking at the information. Well, that’s a plan, to discover one or two fresh ways over the next week to teach some of these topics.
How’s this for my next class at the fly shop: Topic Fly Tying- “Now place your immature fish catching device (bare hook) in the vise.” Naah! Too PC sounding!
I believe I enjoy the learning as much as the teaching. My “cough syrup” for cabin fever. Thank you to all of you who continue to teach me. Enjoy whatever you are doing this week – hopefully fishing or at least thinking about fishing!
Warm lines,
Harry
