Yesterday I was fishing the rainbow trout section of Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg. Some of the trout were coming up to take dry flies while others wanted nymphs. To cover both options I put a Mr. Rapidan Dry Fly #14 on a 9ft 5X leader and a Bead Head Hare’s Ear Nymph #14 on a 3 ft. 6X dropper behind the dry. On my first cast a good size rainbow took the dry. On a fast run past me I saw him and guessed he was about 15 inches. However, after fighting him a long time in the deep pool before me I couldn’t get him in. Finally he swam my way and I saw the reason for the strong fight: not only did I have the rainbow on the dry fly but I had the largest red breasted sunfish on the nymph I’d ever caught.
