In March there are many large trout in the delayed harvest streams and large trout streams. The most effective way to catch these trout is to use streamers which match the minnows the trout feed upon. My three favorite streamers are the Shenandoah Silver Ghost size 10, Shenandoah Skunk size 10 and Mr. Rapidan Streamer size 10.
Fish these across stream below the riffles by crawling them along the stream bottom stripping them 6 inches every 10 seconds. The trout are still a little lethargic from the cold water and their strikes are often very gentle. To help detect these strikes I use my Trout Nymph Leader 9ft 4X with 2 built in Murray’s Fly Shop Indicators. These indicators often show me the trouts’ strike very quickly. The way these leaders are built does not keep the streamer from sinking properly.
Frequently in the deepest pool I use a two-streamer tandem rig on a sinking tip III line with the second streamer coming off the bend of the top streamer with a 24 inch 4X mono dropper.
Wade downstream very slowly when using this method so you can cover all of the stream thoroughly.
