Smallmouths Around the Ledges – Part 1

jm-bass

The river crossing ledges on rivers produce some of the greatest feeding stations for large bass one can find.  This week we’ll look at the tactics for fishing these areas with streamers then next week we’ll look at the popper tactics.

These ledges lie perpendicular to the main currents in the river which over the years often cut gaps ten to twenty feet wide in them.  Great numbers of minnows are swept through these gaps and the bass lie on each side of this heavy flow to feed downstream of the ledges.  An effective way to catch these bass is to wade in downstream of the ledge and move across the river to within forty feet of where the heavy gap cuts through.  The first cast is dropped on the near edge of the fast cut and stripped back ten feet by swimming it six inches every five seconds.  From the casting position make six more cast each five feet longer and aimed downstream a little further.  After completing this sequence wade downstream stopping every ten feet to repeat the same sequence.  There are big bass here so stay with a 2X leader.  The flies I do well with here are Shenk’s White Streamer size 4, Murray’s Magnum Creek Chub size 4 and Murray’s Magnum Darter size 4.
