For the past hour’s smallmouth flyfishing you just haven’t gotten the action you expected. You feel you need to change something but what?
You’ve been fishing poppers so you could try streamers and if that doesn’t work try nymphs and if those don’t work you could even try drys.
Or, since you’ve been using a floating line you could try a sinking tip line and if that fails you could try a fast sinking head fly line.
Or, since you’ve been using a 9 foot 2X Leader you could switch to a 3X and maybe even go to a 12 foot leader.
All of these tactics are logical choices. However, I’ve found a different ploy works best for me.
That is, I change the type water I’m fishing. That is, if I had poor fishing in a deep pool I might try the grassbeds. If the grassbeds don’t produce I’ll try the undercut banks and if these are not fishing well I’ll try the riffles. Usually this method of trying different feeding stations gives me good fishing.
