Smallmouth bass in the cold water found in March and April are willing to feed. However, they are not willing to move far from their feed stations along the stream bottom to capture their feed and there has to be enough there to eat to make their efforts worth while. This tells us as anglers that we should use large streamers and nymphs and fish them slowly along the stream bottom in order to be consistently successful in catching large bass. My favorite flies for this are the Murray’s Magnum Creek Chub size 4 and the Murray’s Heavy Black Hellgrammite size 4.
