Thirty years ago a good friend in Montana showed me a technique that was very effective for him which enabled him to catch large trout on the Yellowstone and Madison River. We called it a “Pump Action”.
Almost by accident, I have been using this technique to help me catch many bass on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River this year. Here is how I’ve been doing this.
Using flies such as our new Magnum Streamers, Strymphs, and Shenk’s White Streamers, I cast across stream and use a conventional action of stripping these six inches every five seconds. I continue this until the fly is 45 degrees down and across stream from me. At this point I begin the “Pumping Action”. With the rod pointed straight down the line and the line tight in the line hand, the rod tip is slowly lifted and dropped a foot every ten seconds. Continue this until the fly is straight downstream and pump it there for about two minutes.
Not only will this method produce many bass, it will catch many large bass.
