Pound up a Smallmouth Bass?

You have a large smallmouth bass swirl under your surface bug but he refuses to take it. Can you cast it back to the same spot repeatedly and convince him to take it like you can with a largemouth? Admittedly, I’ve had great success with this on largemouth bass in the Currituck area in North Carolina, but it usually doesn’t work on smallmouths. A much more productive ploy is to mark the exact spot you got the smallmouth up, leave him alone, then come back an hour later and cast a slightly different bug to his spot. You can normally catch half of these bass. And if he’s a big one he’s worth the effort.
