Popper and Dropper

7-11-bill-1
Fishing a popper and dropper along the shaded banks is very effective at this time of the year

The surface bug fishing is excellent now with the Shenandoah Blue Popper.  However, many bass are feeding well on the small minnows along the river banks.  Here is a technique we use in our schools, guide trips and personal fishing which is very productive by taking advantage of both of these feeding habits of the bass.

I attach a Shenandoah Blue Popper 4 to a 9ft. 2X Bright Butt Leader.  To the bend of the popper hook I attach 3 feet of 2X tippet material with an improved clinch knot and tie a Murray’s Pearl Marauder 10 to this 2X dropper mono.  Both in wading and floating the river I cast this in close to the bank at a 20 degree downstream angle.  By repeatedly mending this popper and dropper gently along the bank you can effectively mimic any natural food which fall onto the surface of the river and the small minnows which swim along the banks.

Fish this out 10 feet from the bank with a slow strip-pause-strip action then pick it up and cast it down the river at 10 foot intervals and you will catch many nice bass on both the Popper and Streamer.
