Many anglers tell me they are poor trout nymph fishermen but they would like to learn how to do better. Here’s my advice to them. Select a day when you are fishing dry flies and doing well: You’ve caught a dozen trout so you know the stream is in good shape and the trout are feeding well. Now, replace your dry fly with a nymph and continue fishing. If you do not catch trout you are simply missing the strikes. You are probably fishing too long a line and when you get the strikes you don’t know it.
The solution: Fish a shorter line, use our Bright Butt Knotted Leader, space two MFS Indicators along the length of the Leader, watch the Bright Butt of the Leader and the Indicators and set the hook quickly when you see a strike. If you fish nymphs only in high discolored water you are not giving yourself a good chance.
