Choosing the Right Strike Indicators for Fly Fishing

Many anglers find that Strike Indicators are essential tools for fly fishing, helping anglers detect subtle strikes while nymphing or fishing subsurface flies. Whether you’re fishing in fast-moving rivers or calm streams, choosing the right indicator can make all the difference. The Murray’s Fly Shop Indicators are designed as a fly fishing strike indicators which are unlike others available on the market today because, they don’t affect your casting or fly presentation. We often fish with an indicator on the leader while fishing with dry flies, nymphs and streamers. No, we don’t need an indicator while we are Dry Fly Fishing but the convenience of leaving the indicator in place makes these indicators an asset.

The Murray’s Indicators are aerodynamic and do not affect your cast or presentation. These indicators are made of a neutral density material which means they don’t float and they don’t sink. Fishing with an indicator on your leader while dry fly fishing has no adverse effect on the drift or presentation. The Murray’s Fly Shop Indicators will follow the leader and fly, meaning if the fly sinks, eventually these indicators will sink as the leader follows the fly down.

How do we use the Murray’s Fly Shop Indicators?

While nymph fishing, we estimate the average depth of the water we suspect the fish are holding in then we place one indicator roughly that length from the fly. When fishing particularly deep water, we will add a second indicator roughly half of that depth distance above the first indicator.

Why Use Strike Indicators?

Strike indicators serve multiple purposes:

  • Detect Strikes – They help you see even the lightest bites from fish.
  • Maintain Depth Control – Adjusting your indicator lets you keep your fly at the desired depth.
  • Improve Drift – A properly placed indicator ensures a natural drift, making your fly more appealing to fish.
