Mending Part 2

Two days ago I covered the importance of mending a fly line by making “corrections” in how the current plays on the line so you can make your streamer act as you want it.

Now that you have a good understanding of that, let’s look at some fine points in mending which will enable you to catch more bass. Keep in mind that you must discern these strikes quickly in order to set the hook before the bass detects it as a phony and spits it out. In order to do this you must feel the strike, which means you must have a tight line from the fly to your line hand. This means that you must pick up the extra slack line with your line hand which results from mending the line. If the strike comes when you have extra coils of slack line on the stream you will not even know you had a strike. Always pick up the extra slack line in order to have a tight line on the fly.
