Light Drag

When I have large brown trout taking small flies on 7X and 8X leaders I set my reel drag as light as possible…just short of back-lashing. This prevents that large brown trout from breaking me off on that first powerful run as he takes up the slack and hits the reel. A drag that is set too strong will permit the brown trout to snap the fine tippet when he takes the first several inches of line off the reel.
