Master the Shenandoah Valley with Murray’s Fly Shop

Whether you’re looking to land a wild native Brook Trout in a pristine mountain stream or battle a trophy Smallmouth Bass on the legendary Shenandoah River, Virginia offers some of the most diverse fly fishing in the Eastern U.S.

At Murray’s Fly Shop, we’ve been leading guided fly fishing trips in Virginia since 1962. Our mission isn’t just to put you on fish—it’s to make you a better angler. Every trip is an instructional adventure tailored to your skill level, from first-timers to seasoned veterans.

Why Book a Guided Trip in Virginia with Us?

Virginia’s waters can be as technical as they are beautiful. Our professional guides provide the local expertise you need to navigate hatches, water levels, and the “secret spots” of the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains.

  • Expert Instruction: Every trip includes hands-on coaching on casting, line mending, and fly selection.
  • All-Inclusive Gear: We provide premium fly rods, reels, and the specific fly patterns (like the famous Mr. Rapidan) that we’ve perfected over decades.
  • Local Legends: Based in Edinburg, VA, we live and breathe these rivers. We know exactly where the fish are holding in every season.

Shenandoah River Smallmouth Bass (Float or Wade)

Experience why the Shenandoah is world-renowned for its Smallmouth Bass. We offer both comfortable float trips in our Hyde Rocky Mountain Skiff or Hyside Rafts and wade fishing adventures.

  • Prime Season: April through mid-October.
    • Pro Tip: While May begins the main season, don’t overlook late March. The March and April pre-spawn period, when conditions are right, provides some of the biggest bass of the entire season as trophy fish move into the shallows.
  • Target Species: Hard-fighting Smallmouth Bass and seasonal Sunfish, Carp and Musky.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience to book a guide?

Absolutely not! We specialize in teaching. Many of our clients have never held a fly rod before their first trip. We’ll have you casting and reading the water with confidence by lunch.

What should I bring?

We provide the fishing gear, but we recommend bringing polarized sunglasses, a brimmed hat, rain gear, and plenty of sunblock. If you have your own lucky rod, feel free to bring it!

Where do we meet?

Most of our trips begin right here at Murray’s Fly Shop in Edinburg, VA, where we’ll go over the day’s plan and ensure you have everything you need before heading to the water.
