
Another way thick aquatic grassbeds can help our smallmouth fishing late in the summer is by the damming effect they have on the current. For example, I recently fished a broad shallow section of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River for several hours one evening. There was so much grass all across the river that I considered stopping for the evening. About that time I noticed that the thick weed growth had shunted the stream flow into a 20 foot wide cut of open water along the shaded west bank. I moved over there and caught many large bass that came from beneath the grass to take my Shenandoah Blue Popper.
