Winter Fly Rod Care
Fly Rod Tips
Fly rod care is important in the winter months. I still fly fish in the winter months but the cold air temperatures cause the water to freeze in the guides. Then the fly line freezes to the guides and it will not slide forward.
Actually the dirt in the guides and on the rod just below the guides is what causes the problem. The water adheres to the dirt and freezes.
To prevent this I scrub the whole fly rod down with Dawn dish detergent using a toothbrush. Next I carefully rinse all of this soapy water off under the spigot. Then I dry the fly rod with a soft cloth. I then apply several drops of Scientific Anglers Fly Line Dressing to a paper towel and rub down the whole rod. Be sure to carefully cover the area around the guides. Finally I use a clean paper towel to rub the whole fly rod down thoroughly.
