Fly Rod
Many fly rod manufacturers have added new styles of rods for the coming year and thus are discontinuing earlier models. This can be a chance to purchase a good earlier model at a good price–if you are careful. However, my friend Jim was not careful.
We had just gotten to Montana for our annual trip and we were standing beside the Yellowstone River stringing up our fly rods in preparation of fishing. Jim walked over and handed me his new fly rod and simply asked, “Can you try this? It feels strange”. I fished it for about 10 minutes there on the river beside us. Then I hand it back to Jim and asked, “Just why did you purchase that rod?” He looked me straight in the eyes and said, “It was on sale. I saved $150”. I said, “I suspected that. It is not a very good rod.” We put Jim’s rod back in his car and I loaned him a Scott Rod I had in my car.
