Fly Fishing in November Report

Fly fishing in November

Fly fishing in November for smallmouth bass can be tricky but not impossible. As the water temperatures are cooling the bass are moving to slow moving deeper water. They are waiting for a big mouthful as an easy meal. Therefore bigger flies=bigger bass!

Flies Recommended for This Month

A Scientific Angler Sonar Intermediate Leader or a Sink Tip fly line works well in these conditions. The water temperature is around 50 degrees so slow your stripping down as the water temperatures continue to drop.

Fly Fishing for Trout in November

The brook trout are spawning so I don’t recommend fishing for them until after the first of the year.

Let’s talk about the stocked trout streams. A Blue Wing Olive or Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16 or 18 on an overcast day when you see fish rising is excellent. There are some caddis to which a Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis Dry in a size 14 or 16 is recommended. Consider fishing this with a dropper such as Perdigon (Olive) Nymph.
