Standing in the middle of a trout stream you are fishing a Light Cahill Dry Fly size 14 and although you are catching a few small trout the big one comes to it and after looking it over they all refuse it. You assume your fly is too large so you get your fly box from your vest to replace the fly. The box slips from your hand, falling into the fast current and washes downstream and you can’t catch it. You may save the day by pruning your Light Cahill. Cut out half of the tail fibers and shorten those left. Cut most of the V out of the hackle on the bottom and cut out half of the remaining hackle. I’ve seen this ploy work in many situations and fool those tough trout.
