I have many anglers come to my casting clinics or just stop in my fly shop and ask me to take them out on our casting lawn to teach them how to double haul. This is a great cast when fishing for bonefish and steelheads and an understanding of the timing sequence is helpful in improving your overall casting. However, for my personal trout fishing I never like to make longer casts than are needed to keep from scaring. Excessively long casts can cause you to loose drag control, miss some strikes and loose accuracy.
In our schools we teach how to read the water properly then use this knowledge to cautiously move into the best location to make your presentation casts. This is a much more efficient method to catch trout all across the country.
