I enjoy trout fishing in the winter and here is how I dress to stay warm and dry. I like a layering system.
My first shirt layer is a silk or poly undershirt, my second shirt layer is a merino-wool/nylon blend. My top shirt is a 100 weight Polartec. My jacket is Permaloft or down. My rain coat is breathable/water proof style.
My long john pants are medium weight poly or merino-wool/nylon blend. My slacks are 100 or 200 weight Polartec.
I like medium weight poly socks under medium weight wool socks. I use Polartec Fingerless Gloves and put a chemical hand warmer in the back of each one. My basic winter hat is medium weight Polartec with pull down ear flaps. Occasionally I use a light weight Polartec balaclava and I really do like the light weight Polartec pull on neck protectors.
I use Simms G3 Wader with the above and this system keeps me warm through most of the winter.
