Crazy Currents

You stand below one of the most beautiful pools you’ve ever seen on a mountain trout stream. There are four seperate riffles entering the head of the pool and you can see five trout feeding on the surface on natural insects. Unfortunately the different riffles entering the head of the pool are producing many swirling currents on surface and you can’t tell where to cast your fly in order to get a natural drift over the feeding trout.——A tactic I use is to watch the drift lines of the foam on the surface of the pool. The natural insects on the surface of the stream drift in exactly the same directions as these foam lines. Locate the specific drift line upstream of the trout you are after and cast your fly two feet above the trout onto this current. It will ride naturally to the trout and he will rise and take it just like a natural insect.
