Catching Wary Trout

Using a cautious approach will help you catch wary trout

The large trout become very wary as the stream levels drop late in the summer.  However, mastering these conditions and catching these trout is very gratifying.

I frequently use a hands and knee approach to move in below the pool I plan to fish.  I look closely to see if I can locate any rising trout.  Then selecting the closest feeder I wait until he takes the third natural.  This assures me that I have not spooked him, it helps me identify his exact feeding station and enables me to calm down.

Now I’m ready for him, but I’m very careful to make my measuring casts well to the side of the pool so the fly line in the air will not scare him.  The presentation cast is made up and across stream so the full leader will not drift over the trout and put him down.  Usually this will take him.  By releasing the trout gently in the tail of the pool I can often catch several more further up in the pool.
