As we fish through the season much of our gear takes a beating. From leaders and flies to waders, boats and fly lines they are all under constant attack. In this post we will cover the steps I follow to care for my fly line.
First, let’s cover a few basic steps to help prolong the life of your fly line:
1. Do not expose your fly line to direct sunlight when it is not in use.
2. Do not expose your fly line to extreme temperatures (i.e. leaving it in your trunk on a 100 degree day).
2. Do not walk on your fly line.
3. Practice for a smooth cast. The snap on the back cast will shorten your lines life span significantly.
4. Make a conscious effort to keep bug repellent and sunblock away from your line.
5. Do not overfill your reel. This will wear the coating off your fly line.
6. Inspect and clean your fly line before it is damaged.
